Monkey Mind

Monchhichi 1984 versus 2025

Monchhichi is a line of Japanese stuffed monkey toys first released in 1974 (when Arda was born). They were licensed by Mattel in the US until 1985. These adorable monkeys were created in order to inspire respect and love in young children. There name is derived from the words ‘Mon’ (which translates to ‘Mine’) and ‘Chichi’ (which closely resembles the sound of baby sucking on a pacifier [Dutch: zuigspeen]). This is a special edition to celebrate the brand's 50 years. Straight from Japan! Wearing a T-shirt with the famous Hokusai [Grote Golf] wave. For Arda, for Valentine’s Day. I have added her little monkey from 1984(!) to this short stop-motion movie.

Everybody happy

Smiley

The smiley icon has been around since 1972 and remains relevant and inspiring. This bright light serves as a gentle and joyful reminder. Switch the led light on for 15 minutes at a time. Just enough to give the little moments in life that extra shine! A gift from ‘Schoonmoedertje’ for X-mas.

“Moksi baby!“

Barong Family

The lion-dragon Barong is the king of the spirits and leader of good forces in Indonesian mythology. Very cool—and rare!—T-shirt for my son Niels (a.k.a. ‘Buffeltje’).

Red Lights

Grave Digger

Monster Truck Fun Facts: Since 1999 there have been a total of 41(!) Grave Digger monster trucks built. Perhaps the most visible trademark is the red headlights which glow whenever the truck is in competition. The lights were first used when Dennis Anderson (the original driver) was building a transporter out of a school bus and removed the characteristic red stop lights.

Evolution of a logo

DESIGN = FIJN animated

Design is an iterative process: explore, try, share, test, reject … and start over again. This cycle approach stimulates progressive insight.

The concept ‘design = fijn’ [Dutch for ‘fine’] has become an integral part of the philosophy underlying all my work: for people who appreciate fine design. My fascination for mechanical typewriters, monospaced fonts, ASCII art and emoji, led to the logo design.

Evolution of Design = fijn

An early version from 2015 to 2018 and now (early) in 2024.

Less but better

Replica Braun ET66 - white

Replica of the iconic Braun pocket calculator ET66 (1977)

In the 1980s Dieter Rams, one of Germany’s most important and the world’s best known industrial designers, formulated his design philosophy; The 10 principles for good design:

  1. Good design is innovative
  2. Good design makes a product useful
  3. Good design is aesthetic
  4. Good design makes a product understandable
  5. Good design is not conspicuous or attracting attention
  6. Good design is honest
  7. Good design is long-lasting
  8. Good design is thorough, down to the last detail
  9. Good design is environmental-friendly
  10. Good design is as little design as possible

It’s no accident that this Braun calculator looks surprisingly similar to some features in the iPhone as Steve Jobs and his lead designer Jonathan Ive used to admire the products and design philosophy of Dieter Rams.

My Braun replica—a limited edition in white—comes from the Design Museum In London.

Koninklijke aandacht

Building an archive is a lovely, long-winded, never-ending affair. Each project added is done so with reference to—and in memory of—previous projects. It’s a reflection of your taste and mindset, both of which can change. Consider a good archive as a map of your time spent and spaces travelled.

In 2014 I realized this charming book for Alzheimer Nederland.
